What the player chooses matters, but which choices they are offered matters more.

Choice Design

Choices are what make a story interactive. They're also the easiest thing to get wrong. It's tempting to think good choice design means offering more options, or bigger consequences. It doesn't. It means shaping the meaning, context, and emotional weight of each decision — so that choosing feels like something, not like answering a quiz question.

A choice works when the player understands what's on offer and can sense what might follow. And not every choice needs to change the story: some exist simply to let players express who they are. What matters is that each one is a genuine moment of decision, written for how the player feels right then — not for the flowchart behind it.
